Answers to your Questions
1) VACCINATIONS: Are your pets’ vaccinations up to date? In the case of dogs they will also need to have a Kennel Cough Vaccination - at least 2 weeks before booking in. If your pet has not been vaccinated within the last year or you are not sure whether a KC vaccination has been done, please check with your vet. Don’t forget to bring the vaccination certificate with you. All pets coming to Vierthof MUST be fully vaccinated.
2) BEDDING: Remember that some dogs chew their bedding – so don’t bring anything precious. Foam filled beds and pillows are not ideal. If they get wet, they are extremely difficult for us to dry. Also, if you are bringing blankets it’s a good idea to mark them with your pet’s name. And please not white bedding!!
3) DIET: You don’t need to bring feeding or water bowls with you. We feed twice daily and diet will be discussed with you when you drop your pet off. You are welcome to bring their own food from home but please make it simple, as it can get a bit confusing if we are busy.
4) LEADS & TOYS: Please don’t leave your dogs’ leads with us as they get mislaid and then we are in trouble! Unless your dog has a special toy that he always plays with or carries in his mouth, toys are not really necessary. They seldom play with them, as there are more important things to keep them occupied. They also get lost and we cannot be responsible for them. Obviously if your dog retrieves, then a couple of old tennis balls are fine.
5) FLEAS & TICKS: It is always a good idea to put some form of flea and tick control on your pets before you bring them in. We endeavour to keep the place as flea and tick free as possible – and de-worming them is not a bad idea either.
6) TREATS: Feel free to bring chews, hooves or treats for your pets. All the dogs are given a treat at night, before ‘lights out’.
7) EXERCISE: We try to exercise all the dogs on a daily basis. In some cases they are taken out for walks on the lead but generally they are allowed to run in the enclosed exercise areas at the kennels. Exercising dogs is not always as easy as you may think and we use our experience and discretion regarding methods, particularly with dogs we do not know. However, you can rest assured that your dogs are not sitting cooped up in a corner for the duration of their stay. The kennels are spacious and the dogs get plenty of exercise running around in their kennels just checking out the latest activity in the Vierthof day!
8) NOISE PHOBIA: If your pet is scared of thunder or fire works (noise phobic) please remember to let us know. It is also a good idea to ask your vet for something to calm them down if your pet becomes extremely anxious.
9) THE DOG KENNELS: Each kennel consists of a bedroom area with a small door leading into a run. There is plenty of room for at least 2 large family dogs to share.
10) WHEN YOU ARRIVE: Please leave your pets in the car and come into the office to do the paperwork first. You then drive down to the kennels or walk to the cattery.
11) LOCATION: If you are coming from Somerset West/Strand we are 4.5 kms from the Medi Clinic hospital, on the Old Sir Lowrys Pass Rd, (Number 24 on the right). If you are coming on the N2, take the Sir Lowrys Pass Village turn off (sign posted), come through “Sun City”, turn left just over the railway line and we are 1.5 kms from the turning, on the left hand side (Number 24).
